Nursing, Pre-Licensure Major

The BSN program is designed to answer God’s call to bring health, healing and hope to others through the hands of our nursing students and future nurses.  Our nursing curriculum provides a strong foundation in science and patient care, along with opportunities to reflect thoughtfully on the students’ vocation as a nurse and spiritual enrichment by integrating faith-based values. 

Graduates of the program are awarded a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam and seek licensure as registered professional nurses.

EPSLO 1: Patient-Centered Care
Utilizes nursing judgment in developing a plan of care to promote, maintain, and supervise the health and wellness of patients across the life span in a variety of settings.

EPSLO 2: Teamwork and Collaboration
Collaborate with intra- and interdisciplinary healthcare team members to foster open communication, respect, and shared decision-making.

EPSLO 3: Evidence-Based Practice and Quality Improvement

1. Applies principles of evidence-based practice in the delivery of patient-centered care.

EPSLO 4: Safety
Provide safe and effective nursing care by minimizing risk of harm to culturally diverse patients, families and communities across the lifespan.

Maximizes the use of information technology when communicating, managing, and supporting patients across the life span and in different settings to promote, maintain or restore health.

EPSLO 6: Professionalism
Assumes accountability for practice as a professional nurse in accordance with professional, legal and ethical standards as well as institutional policies and procedures.

Important Notes

• No major program courses may be exempted or taken at another college.
• 40% of major requirements must be upper division.
• No grade lower than C is accepted for major requirements.
• A minimum major GPA of 2.75 is required.
• Nursing courses are sequential. Therefore, students must successfully pass a course with a minimum of C to meet the prerequisite of the next course in the sequence. Example: NUR112 must be passed in order to take NUR115, and NUR117 must be passed in order to be eligible to take NUR211, and so on throughout the curriculum.

Academic planning is the student's responsibility. This Graduation Plan is designed to be a guide to assist students as they plan their course selections. This is only a suggested schedule, and is not a substitute for a student's Advising Worksheet, nor the Program Requirements in the Judson University Catalog. Actual course selections should be made with the advice and approval of an academic advisor. Students should become familiar with the catalog in effect at the time at which they entered the institution. Course requirements and sequencing may vary with AP courses, transfer courses, English/math placement, or other conditions.

A full-time course load for undergraduate students is 12-18 credits per semester. Illinois residents receiving state aid should register for 15 hours per semester.

In addition to the courses below, chapel is required for all traditional full-time students (i.e., those taking 12 or more credit hours), both residents and commuters. This course counts as 1 credit towards a student's full-time status within the term, but does not earn credits towards graduation.

During the fall term of the second year, all students must submit an application to the major, for acceptance into the professional portion of the nursing program. Students must achieve an overall GPA of 2.75 in all coursework, minimum grades of C in BIO371 and CHM151/CHM153, minimum grades of B in BIO273 and BIO274, and a 70% or higher on the TEAS exam. Students must also pass a background check and drug screen, as described in the Nursing supplement to the Judson University Student Handbook. Students must be formally accepted into the major by the department as a prerequisite for all NUR courses (with the exception of NUR101).

Students must pass all clinical and/or lab  components in addition the didactic (lecture) portion. Failure in any single component will require a student to repeat all components. This applies to all NUR courses.
