Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (RN)

The AASN program adheres to state requirements and recommendations for theory and clinical components which gives students time and opportunity for matriculation, indoctrination, and socialization into the nursing profession. The professional registered nurse functions within the roles identified by the National League for Nursing as a leader, manager, supervisor, teacher, counselor, communicator, and caregiver. The registered nurse is prepared to manage and/or provide nursing care by initiating the patient’s plan of care to include patient assessment, nursing diagnosis, appropriate patient-care interventions, and evaluation of the effectiveness of care provided.

Graduates of the AASN Program are awarded an Associate of Applied Science Nursing (AASN) degree and are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam and seek licensure as registered professional nurses.

Admitted students will be awarded 10 transfer credits on the basis of an active, unencumbered PN license in the state of Illinois. LPNs who have an active license are not required to take the RN entrance exam but rather must take the NUR 110 Practical to Professional Transitions Course. The course includes content and review of the scope of PN and RN practice that will prepare students for the ATI RN Fundamentals and Pharmacology exams.

Utilizes nursing judgment in developing a plan of care to promote, maintain, and supervise the health and wellness of patients across the life span in a variety of settings.

Collaborate with intra- and interdisciplinary healthcare team members to foster open communication, respect, and shared decision-making.

1. Applies principles of evidence-based practice in the delivery of patient-centered care.

EPSLO 4: Safety
Provide safe and effective nursing care by minimizing risk of harm to culturally diverse patients, families and communities across the lifespan.

EPSLO 5: Informatics
Maximizes the use of information technology when communicating, managing, and supporting patients across the life span and in different settings to promote, maintain or restore health.

EPSLO 6: Professionalism
Assumes accountability for practice as a professional nurse in accordance with professional, legal and ethical standards as well as institutional policies and procedures.

Important Notes

• No grade lower than C is accepted for major requirements.
• No major program courses may be exempted or taken at another college. LPNs who have an active license are not required to take HSC102 Pharmacology Essentials (4 c.h.) or NUR112 Foundation of Nursing (6 c.h.)
• Nursing program courses are sequential. Therefore, students must successfully pass a course with a minimum of C to meet the prerequisite of the next course in the sequence. Example: BIO273 must be passed in order to take BIO274, and so on throughout the curriculum.

Students with an active LPN license should take NUR110 Practical to Professional Nurse Transitions (3 c.h.). All other students will take NUR101 Academic Success Seminar (3 c.h.).

Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (2.5-Year Plan)
