Departments, Divisions and Programs
Judson offers a variety of degree programs, including the Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Architecture, Master of Arts, Master of Education and Doctor of Education degrees. Along with their degree, each student chooses a major area of focus. Specific graduation requirements vary by program, and can be found in the catalog under the appropriate department or division.
Major
A defined sequence of courses taken by a student within his/her main area of study; 30 to 70 credit hours, unless constrained by official requirements of an outside accreditation agency.
Majors are considered "declared" when students indicate their selected major on their Judson application for admission. Students wishing to change their major, declare a second major or declare a minor must fill out a Major Declaration/Change Form in MyJudson under Student Info. Students who indicate they are undecided are encouraged to declare a major by the end of their first semester at Judson. Requirements are those in effect the day the application is filed in the Registrar's Office.
The option of an individually designed major (IDM) enables students to design a program of study to meet specific unique career goals. The option of an individually designed major is available to students with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above and must be approved not later than the first semester of the junior year, allowing the student to complete at least 24 hours of the required coursework at Judson University. Students, in consultation with an IDM advisor, must describe the rationale for the IDM and explain how their program will fulfill all the institutional objectives, as well as meet specific program objectives. Courses may include study abroad, independent study projects, or faculty-supervised internships. The major must include at least 48 hours, and must be approved by the Department/Division Chair, the Associate Provost for Curriculum and the Academic Policies Committee. Deadline dates for formal application are: October 1 for the following spring semester and March 1 for the following fall semester. Contact the appropriate department/division chairperson for details.
Minor
A defined sequence of courses taken by a student with an emphasis outside his/her major area of study; 18 to 28 credit hours; the minor department may determine whether/how many courses may count toward both the major and minor (reapplying courses is allowable, if learning outcomes are comparable).
Concentration
A defined sequence of courses to emphasize a particular area of study within a major; at least 15 credit hours.
Certificate
A credential issued by an institution in recognition of the completion of a curriculum other than one leading to a degree. For certificates bearing academic credit, a certificate is 12 to 20 hours, and an advanced certificate is 21 or more hours.
Note that not all certificate programs lead to a formal award.
Degree Requirements
Application for Graduation
All students in pursuit of a degree from Judson University must submit an Application for Graduation at least one year prior to the planned graduation date.
All degree seeking students at Judson are required to meet with their academic advisor to complete the application. The advisor must review and approve the planned coursework. Applications that are not filled out entirely or do not have a copy of the degree audit attached will be returned to the student for completion. Once the application is accepted by the Registrar’s Office, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain approval from the Registrar for any changes in their plan for completing requirements and to verify that course registration each term matches the approved plan. No late applications will be accepted.
The Application for Graduation form is available via MyJudson > Student Info > Degree Info.
In submitting a graduation application, students acknowledge that they understand that their academic requirements must be completed and all accounts must be cleared before Commencement, and that a graduation fee will be applied regardless of participation in the formal Commencement ceremony.
Diplomas/Degree Conferral Date
Diplomas will be issued for each student who has completed all requirements for their degree. Conferral dates coincide with commencement dates; April/May for spring conferrals, August 31st and December for fall conferrals. Diplomas will not be issued for each major/minor/certificate completed in an undergraduate program.
Carry-Over Credit Policy
Degree candidates participating in the spring ceremony will be permitted to carry over one course (to a maximum of four credit hours) which must end no later than three weeks into the summer term. They must have satisfactorily completed all other academic requirements and registered and paid for the carry-over course. The degree will be conferred upon successful completion of the carry-over course and payment of outstanding accounts.
All degree candidates who complete their graduation requirements after the three week summer term but prior to August 31 will participate in the next fall ceremony. Upon their course completion, they can be issued a letter stating that they have met all graduation requirements. Their degree will be conferred as of August 31.
Replacement Diplomas
Lost or destroyed diplomas may be replaced with a written request to the Registrar's Office along with a $25.00 replacement fee (cash or check).
Letters of Completion
All degree candidates who have completed their program requirements, and are waiting on degree conferral may request a Letter of Completion from the Registrar's Office stating that they have met all graduation requirements.
